Intel Retires Pentium and Celeron

Intel rebranded the Pentium and Celeron processors names. The two processor lines that are identical to the entry-level device will carry the new name "Intel Processor".

This new name will replace the Pentium and Celeron brands starting in the first quarter of 2023. Intel hopes this change will make it easier for customers to choose entry-level laptops.

"Intel is committed to driving innovation to benefit of users, and our entry-level processor family is critical to raising the standart for PCs across all price points," said Intel VP Josh Newman in a statement.

"Branding for Intel Processor will simplify our offerings, so users can focus on choosing the right processor for their needs."

After this name change, Intel will focus on the Core, Evo, and vPro brands for flagship products and use the Intel Processor for essential products.

With this announcement, the Pentium brand officially came to an end after it was first introduced in 1993. When it was just launched, the Pentium was a flagship chip that was intended for high-end desktop machines before being used for laptops.

Since 2006, Intel has used a Core brand for flagship processor lines and the Pentium brand has been downgraded to become a mid-range processor brand.

Meanwhile, Celeron is a brand used by Intel for entry-level devices at affordable prices. This brand was first launched in 1998 and currently Intel Celeron is widely used by Chromebooks and cheap laptops.

Intel said this brand change will not affect the products they offer today or the road map going forward. This name change was also announced ahead of the announcement of the 13th generation Intel Core processors.
