However, this is expected to change in the near future. Google has released a new software development kit (SDK) that allows you to develop apps on a variety of devices, not just Android, announced at I/O 2022.
1. SDK functions for different devices
This SDK uses wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ultra-Broadband to provide services between devices. Google notes three main features, namely:
Device Discovery : Find nearby devices easily.
Secure connections : Enable secure, low-latency data exchange between devices.
Cross-Device Sessions : Allows you to switch or extend the UX across devices.
Additionally, Google says there are three main principles for providing this SDK to different devices and apps. These principles are:
Universal : The SDK must work on all devices, from phones to tablets.
Modular : Application developers should be able to integrate the SDK with other solutions.
Extensibility : SDKs are not limited to a specific cross-device experience, but allow you to build features and experiences personally.
"This SDK takes the hassle out of device discovery, authentication, and connectivity protocols so developers can focus on what matters most: creating the best user experiences and connecting them across form factors and platforms," Google wrote on Friday ( 8/26/2022). ).
2. SDK usage examples
So what can be done with this SDK? Google introduces many practical uses, such as multiplayer gaming experiences, seamless switching of productivity apps between devices, and group food ordering.
"Our SDK does all the work behind the scenes, offers a modular API that supports two-way communication between multiple devices, and is backward compatible with Android 8," Google wrote.
With this SDK, users can read long articles on their mobile phones and continue them to the end on tablets without starting from scratch. While driving in a car, users can directly transmit the location of their destination to the car's navigation system. Then, when ordering food, users can record orders without handing over the device.
3. Is the new limited to Android or iOS and Windows?
Even so, Google has noted some flaws in its latest SDK. First, the bad news: this feature is only available on Android phones and tablets. In addition to being impermanent, because it is still in its early stages, Google cautions against using this SDK for production applications.
This SDK is available in developer preview and only for Android phones and tablets. Of course, Google ensures that this SDK will be available to non-Android developers for other non-Android OSes. Sorry, when will this SDK be available on other OS? Only time and Google will tell.
